How are workers exposed to toxic materials?

On Behalf of | Oct 11, 2021 | Workers' Compensation |

Workers in numerous industries fear an accident that can lead to serious injuries. A ladder fall, for example, or a malfunctioning power tool can result in broken bones, head trauma or paralysis. Additionally, the strain of repetitive movements can damage muscles, ligaments and tendons. Some workers, unfortunately, face health hazards due to exposure to toxic materials.

While some industries lend themselves more naturally to toxic exposure, workers might find themselves facing hazardous material exposure in a number of ways, including:

  • Inhalation: Depending on the industry and the types of materials, workers could inhale toxic chemicals in the form of vapor, dust or other particulate matter. Silica dust, asbestos and toxic fumes could all lead to devastating lung conditions such as silicosis, asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer.
  • Ingestion: Whether the material is a chemical that splashes or dust that makes it to the face and lips of a worker, swallowing dangerous materials can lead to severe conditions. Digestive problems or stomach distress often result from ingesting toxic materials.
  • Skin contact: Simply touching a toxic material can prove dangerous to a worker’s health. From something as simple as skin irritation to more deadly like muscle damage or a blood poisoning, workers face danger from something as common as a chemical splash.

Based on the type of material, the level of exposure and the duration Kentucky workers can face numerous life-altering conditions. Exposure to toxic materials can lead to catastrophic injuries and life-long conditions. Continuous exposure to certain materials can result in fatality.
