4 wet weather tips to follow while driving

On Behalf of | Nov 3, 2016 | Car Accidents/MVA |

Driving is a dangerous yet, for most people, necessary task. Every time you step into your car, you are facing the risks of other drivers, traffic troubles and weather conditions. The latter of these is a common cause of mayhem on the road and, according to the Federal Highway Administration, can cause impaired vision and other risks. You can minimize your chances of collision or injury by learning a few useful driving tips. Follow these pointers to avoid letting wet weather cause any undue problems.

1. Do not use cruise control

Cruise control is a great feature to help drivers maintain speed and minimize gas usage, but it can be a liability when you are driving in rainy or otherwise poor weather conditions. If you need to reduce speed, using cruise control can make it difficult to do so, and this may boost your chances of losing control of your vehicle. Reserve this function for days when the road is dry and clear.

2. Drive slower than you usually would

Driving slower than usual will effectively reduce the chance of hydroplaning and make stopping suddenly easier to do if it becomes necessary. Always be cautious in bad weather.

3. Leave plenty of room between cars

Driving too closely to the car in front of you is a surefire way to increase the chances of a collision and personal injury. It is always important to leave plenty of space between cars, but it is vital when you are driving in wet weather. Consider if you would be able to stop on short notice without hitting the driver in front of you, and if the answer is no, tap the brakes to give them a little bit more room.

4. Deal with skidding carefully

If your car begins to skid on the wet road, it is a natural reaction to panic, but it is also essential that you avoid this and react calmly. Instead of getting upset, press on the brakes as you normally would and continue looking and steering in the direction you want to go. Do not slam on the brakes as this will increase the likelihood of losing control of your car.

Driving safely in wet weather is a great way to avoid accidents that can result in personal injury. If you are dealing with such an accident, however, an attorney can offer advice regarding your legal options.
