Industries that have the highest injury rates

Kentucky citizens suffer work-related injuries every year, and some industries have higher numbers of work accidents than others. It is possible to reduce the likelihood of injury accidents in even the most dangerous jobs with careful attention to safety practices.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the industry sector with the highest rate of workplace injuries is animal production. This includes farm work, ranch work and feedlots with an injury rate of 6.6 workers per every 100. People who work in private nursing homes and residential care facilities have the second-highest injury rate with 6.5 injuries for every 100 workers. Government-run facilities have an even higher injury rate with 11.7 work injuries for every 100 employees.

People who work as messengers have an average injury rate of 6.4 injuries for every 100 workers. Wood-product manufacturing and air transportation round out the top five with injury rates of 5.9 per 100 and 5.8 per 100 respectively. Some employers view safety measures as a cost rather than as an investment to reduce injury accidents. Safety should be prioritized in workplaces as reduced injury rates can save employers money while also protecting workers' lives.

When a person suffers a workplace injury while working, that employee may file for workers' compensation benefits regardless of whether he or she caused the accident. Workers' compensation is meant to protect workers who are injured on the job. If a person applies for benefits and his or her employer disputes the claim, he or she may want to consult with a workers' compensation attorney. A lawyer may help his or her client with collecting the needed medical documentation to prove that the injury resulted from the person's job. He or she may litigate the matter before the hearing officer in order to try to secure benefits for his or her client.
